Counseling FAQs

What is the difference between counseling and therapy?

Counseling, therapy, and psychotherapy are different words describing the same thing. There are no significant differences.

How do I know if I should seek counseling?

Relationships sometimes get stuck. If you are in a difficult relationship, and if your best effort hasn't made it better, counseling can help. People, too, can get stuck as they respond to unexpected changes in their lives. Others are overwhelmed by emotional pain, guilt, doubt, or anxiety and wish to develop coping skills. Counseling offers support and skills to help you deal with life challenges.

What happens in counseling? How often does it happen?

Counseling sessions provide safe places for individuals to talk about their concerns. Couples and families communicate more openly and deeply in counseling. Sessions last 50 minutes. At the beginning it is helpful to have weekly sessions, and to think about and practice newly developed skills on the days between sessions. Toward the end of the counseling it is often possible to meet less frequently, allowing more time for thoughtful practice. Sometimes people come to counseling with crises that need more than one session per week. Although there are many exceptions, most people make desired changes within 6-12 counseling sessions.

What if my partner or other family members won't join me in counseling?

Although needed changes happen more quickly and permanently when couples or families are together in counseling, you can make changes by yourself that will help everyone. It is far better that one partner or family member be in counseling than for no one to get help.

What specific things can I expect from counseling?

The benefits you receive from counseling depend on how well you put into practice what you learn. Some of the benefits available from counseling with me:
  • Experience less conflict and better communication in your relationships
  • Find better ways to cope with anxiety and stress
  • Manage anger and depression
  • Improve your feelings of self-worth
  • Develop more meaningful and intimate couple relationships
  • Improve your parenting skills
  • Resolve the things that caused you to get stuck
  • Find freedom from addictions
  • Faith-based counseling is an option
Is counseling confidential?

The law protects the confidentiality of nearly all communication between clients and counselors. Exceptions are allowed only when the safety of persons would be jeopardized if counselors maintained confidences.
